PTS News, Fall, 2008

On September 18th, Pacific Tugboat Service participated in the 8th annual San Pedro Bay Tugboat Race. It’s a great event that always draws an appreciative crowd along the shoreline and on spectator boats. The parade started out with the Long Beach Fire Boat followed by last years defending champion in the Open Class race, M/V Craig G. followed by M/V Gracie G, M/V Supplier, M/V Christopher G, & the crowd favorite the little tug that could Tug Jag. After the ceremonial Parade it was down to business. PTS started out the Open Class race with M/V Craig G. & Gracie G followed by the great tugboat race. Just to let you know what we were up against we raced the Tug Millennium Dawn 4322 hp and the Foss Alta June 5000 hp against our Mighty Tug Jag of 1000 hp and the crowd’s underdog favorite. As they started off it was the Jag then the Alta then the Dawn.
As we all know it’s not about winning its how you run the race. Still, we are happy to report that Pacific Tugboat Service won the Open Class Race with M/V Gracie G; and in the Conventional Tugboat race we won with the mighty tug that could & did; the tug Jag. All that attended the race & dinner had a fantastic time. The true winners were the International Seafarers Center of Long Beach – Los Angeles. We at Pacific Tugboat Service salute the top port complex ISC Contributors & the 2008 Great Annual Tug Boat Race.

Even while the tugboat races were being planned and held, the PTS fleet was busy on the water working. Tows, charters, island deliveries, crew boat runs,
shipyard assist, water deliveries, trash removal, fireworks, gangways, target towing, AMP Barge service and even some salvage work and more have contributed to making PTS Long Beach/L.A. a busy place this Fall.

PTS San Diego has been active as well. The crew boat Rachel G. underwent USCG approved refit and is ready to enter service in the PTS fleet. The landing craft Supplier performed cable laying activities near Point Loma and then at press time went off-shore to conduct ocean science drilling and core-samples along the coast. We planted trees in the Bay Delta area, we towed
mega-yachts and submarines in San Diego and continued to perform on Government and commercial contracts.

All of that and some new business has kept the PTS folks on the docks, on board and even in the office quite busy lately. Mr. Pat Neal is now the 24/7/365 Dispatcher in San Diego. Pat has extensive experience in both the San Diego and L.A./Long Beach areas and will apply his background and his friendly and efficient style to his new role.

Keith Ullrich takes over as the PTS Purchasing Agent. Keith’s knowledge of boats and marine supply requirements from the operational side will make him uniquely qualified to supply the PTS fleet. He will also be seen more frequently out on the water exercising his Master of Tow license!

We invite you to visit us any time you are in the L.A./Long Beach or San Diego area.

Meanwhile; all of us at PTS wish our friends and colleagues success and happiness this Fall. We look forward to seeing you out on the water!
